| | Another manufacturer chooses VIA for their UMPC design Friday, April 20, 2007 "Medion has snubbed Intel's new ultramobile processor platform with the launch of its first UMPC. The RIM 1000 will feature a VIA C7-M 770 ULV processor, 768MB of RAM and a 6.5in touchscreen. There's a 30GB hard disk, and future versions will "probably" have a solid state hard disk... The device boasts 802.11b/g wireless and an integrated webcam, and Munday hinted that a future version may ship with a SIM card slot for HSDPA network access." This news article on PCPro.co.uk goes on to conjecture: "while no claims were made about battery life, the chip's 5W thermal design power (TDP) should make the RIM 1000 more than a match for devices powered by Intel's new McCaslin CPUs, which have just over double the TDP at 12W." | |
| VIA Defines Pico-ITX Form Factor, the World’s Smallest x86 Mainboard Thursday, April 19, 2007

VIA has officially launched the Pico-ITX platform: "The Pico-ITX form factor is the latest advance in VIA’s proven record on platform miniaturization. The Mini-ITX mainboard, at 17cm x 17cm, which recently celebrated its 5th anniversary as an industry standard form factor with wide market adoption, was followed by the Nano-ITX form factor at 12cm x 12cm, exactly 50% of the size of the Mini-ITX. Now, the Pico-ITX, at 10cm x 7.2cm and 50% of the size of the Nano-ITX form factor, truly embodies VIA’s “Small is Beautiful” technology design strategy of shrinking the form factor to drive the x86 platform into ever smaller systems and whole new device categories." We have some exclusive images here of a reference board, one of them pictured above. Take a look and read all about the Pico-ITX here. | |

| I know I've reported on it already this week but... Thursday, April 19, 2007 "Computer maker Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new desktop computer aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, the HP Compaq dx2020, and the system is notable not because it's an HP product exclusively for the Chinese market, but because it isn't driven by an Intel or AMD processor. Instead, the dx2020 marks the first time a major computer manufacturer is shipping a mass-market PC powered by a processor from Via Technologies." Source: CNet. | |
| Surfing blind Thursday, April 19, 2007 "A government survey in the U.K. found that 12% of respondents had suffered from online fraud in 2006, yet fewer than half of the respondents believed they should be responsible for protecting their personal information online." I am very surprised by that figure. I really don't know anyone at all that has fallen victim to online fraud. I get phishing emails all the time but I don't know anyone who has actually fallen for them. It's probably not a bad idea to review your online security measures from time to time. DigitalTrends.com has put together a guide to keeping your identity safe online. | |
