World changing interviews VIA International Relations Manager
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Scott Phipps is VIA's International Relations Manager - a position established last year to work with governments and organizations across the world to work out computing and power solutions specific to each region. WorldChanging.com has interviewed Scott about VIA's pc-1 and carbon free initiatives: "What's happened is, internally there's been a big focus on the fact that there's such a race for speed and ramping up the power, but an analogy that works is, you could be driving a hummer, but do you use all the features? Or would you be better off driving a Prius? So for example, the carbon-free PC uses the C7M processor, which is advantageous because it has a TDP [Thermal Design Power] maximum of 20 watts at 2 gigahertz. But it also has step-down technology, which means that when it's in different modes--sleep or idle modes--its power consumption dramatically ramps down. Especially when you're working with power sources like renewables, every source of power draw is critical."

UMPCs "spawning in their sleep"
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

The UMPC class of ultra mobile devices is still evolving argues Rob Enderle at DigitalTrends.com: "This class is for those that want the capability of a laptop computer but the portability of a Smartphone (granted, a big Smartphone). These things are as much about statement as they are about functionality. They say something about the owner; that suggests that the Flipstart is distinctly different from the OQO, because it is a more traditional clamshell design laptop that just happens to weigh less than two pounds. This compares to the OQO, which has an edgier design with a slide-up screen and is closer to a one-pound weight."

OQO model 02 reviewed
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

I started going through the news today looking for things to post, thinking that OQO's model 02 was still hard to come by and I think I even commented as much in an earlier news post. But I am coming across a lot of media with access to samples now. BusinessWeek.com have in fact reviewed a unit.

"An eye-catching add-on is a sleek black docking station that includes an optical combination drive, with a metal arm attached to hold the model 02. The base comes with one USB port in the front and two in the back, a rear headphone jack, Ethernet port, VGA connector, and High-Definition Multimedia Interface out jack to attach to a full-size monitor. Other nifty features deserving a mention: technology that protects your hard drive in case you drop the device, and a double-capacity $199 battery that lasted four hours (the standard battery conks out at just under two hours)."

Now I'm not quite sure what his flatmates or family were thinking when they saw this cake. Neither did he mention whether the home-made cake was any good." GPS on a UMPC
Monday, March 12, 2007

One of my greatest fears about the UMPC EPIA Cattle trip was having to deal with my wife's navigational skills. Thank God Innovision came to the rescue with Laptop 10 and a GPS unit. We were able to install it on the reference UMPC and set our destination without having to refer to any maps. We took a little video of the first test of the software on the UMPC. Since then we have got rid of the horrid robot voice. Take a look at the video here.
