OQO on the road
Monday, January 22, 2007

USAToday.com are lucky enough to have themselves a sample OQO model 02. "The new OQO is the latest in an expanding field for bantamweight computers known as UMPCs (ultramobile PCs), a class of machines being pushed by Microsoft. They are more robust, and larger, than PDAs but generally not the versatile workhorses that conventional laptops are." This is the first article on the OQO that I've come across where the writer actually has hands-on experience that's greater than a five minute trial at a trade show. "Having EV-DO was a godsend during my travels through Denver and Las Vegas when I didn't have access to Wi-Fi. You'll have to pay $149 for the EV-DO module, plus $60 a month for a two-year contract or $80 a month for one year. The unit has a retractable whip antenna." Read the full article here.

Gamers not moving to Vista?
Monday, January 22, 2007

Talking to a variety of different people that I game with over the last couple of days, I was surprise that not one person out of the thirty-odd people I spoke with, were even considering moving to Vista in the next few months. Most of these guys are playing WOW, BF2 or SWG. Some of the comments I got were 'Why would I want to spend that amount of money on a new OS when I could spend it on a new video card, RAM or other upgrade?' or 'I'll let someone else do the beta testing' or 'It offers no performance increase for gamers so why would I waste my time?' I know a lot of the guys in our forums will be moving over to Vista and some of them even moved over to it during the beta testing stage. Although I might install it on some of my PCs, I don't think I will be upgrading my gaming rig until there is a game that requires it or runs better on it.

Tablet Kiosk
Monday, January 22, 2007

TabletKiosk launched their UMPC in mid-2006. OQO certainly stole the show at CES this year, but TabletKiosk where there as well and they didn't escape the attention of ThinkComputers.org: "TabletKiosk is primarily a seller to the vertical market (large companies, not home users) and they had a few of their ultra mobile tablet PCs on display at Lunch@Piero's. They were mainly showcasing their TabletKiosk v7110 tablet PC which is based on the VIA C7-M processor running at 1.0GHz and was running Windows XP Tablet Edition. It used a small joystick for a mouse and also featured handwriting recognition."

Pico-ITX named EPIA PX
Monday, January 22, 2007

"VIA demonstrated a new size of EPIA motherboard at CES this year measuring just 100 x 72mm - the Pico-ITX. The prototype EPIA PX was powered by a 1GHz C7 CPU and an unnamed chipset with Unichrome Pro II functionality, making it both smaller and potentially slightly faster than current 120 x 120mm Nano-ITX boards." Read on at Mini-ITX.com.

S3 cards a steal for HDTV users
Friday, January 19, 2007

ThinkComputers.org were at CES this year and they have a pretty in-depth article covering the Lunch at Piero's event. S3 had their goods on display: "One thing that is special about it is that it can playback both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray titles via a HDMI out on the card. They had a demo unit setup with an internal Blu-Ray drive and an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive connected VIA USB. Using WinDVD 8 they are able to easily playback both formats and output them to any display with a HDMI port. This capability really makes the card ideal for HTPC users, especially when prices of both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drives come down. The card is available now and you can get it for $70 so it's a steal!"

Mini-ITX.com sees EPIA-EX model release imminent
Friday, January 19, 2007

The EPIA-EX model is "...targetting the EX at the x86 consumer electronics market..." Mini-ITX.com reports that it was first shown off at Computex last year but should be available shortly and with it, a new chipset. "The CX700M2 chipset is of most interest - the UniChrome Pro II 2D/3D graphics core promises hardware decoding acceleration of MPEG-2/-4 and WMV9 video, HDTV output up to 1080i and multi-channel HD audio. The CX700M2 chipset follows on from where the CN700 left off and at first glance appears to be broadly similar to Intel's recent mobile chipsets in capabilities."

OQO orders VIA CPUs and VIA on Demand is renamed
Friday, January 19, 2007

Digitimes.com reports that "VIA Technologies has reportedly snapped up orders for its UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) use processors and supporting chipsets from US-based vendor OQO, according to market sources. VIA's shipments of the CPUs and chipsets to OQO this year will allow the US vendor to roll out 40,000 UMPCs, the sources said." Surely not all that surprising considering the launch of the VIA C7-M ULV processor based device at CES recently. They also report that "In related news, VIA OnDemand, a subsidiary of VIA Technologies, will be re-named as CatchPlay, providing online gaming, video downloading and other digital content, the sources added."
