The Ultra Mobile vocabulary
Sunday, November 25, 2007

Bjorn over at Ultra Mobile Life lives an ... well an ultra mobile life. If you're uninitiated in the lingo, having a conversation about market trends in the ultra mobile space with Bjorn would be like talking particle physics with Stephen Hawking. OK well maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get the idea. To help us all out Bjorn has put together a dictionary of ultra mobile terms:

"we should come up with a common vocabulary to describe the myriad of shapes and forms that UMPCs take. Anyone want to help? I'll start. Feel free to add more in the comments and I'll keep an up to date document with all of the UMPC related vocabulary in it."

The $199 Linux PC is back on Walmart shelves
Sunday, November 25, 2007

The sun will now shine for Linux lovers everywhere as Walmart has restocked their shelves with the new gPC “just in time for the holidays.”

The $199 Linux PC had made great sales at Walmart. In fact, one of the spokespersons of the company had commented to Information Week that the new Linux PC has “been one of the top performing desktop computers on Walmart.com.” However to the misfortune of many Linux fans, the $199 Linux PC soon sold out online.

Not anymore. The Everex TC2502 Green gPC is back on the shelves and is listed as "In Stock." Believe it.

2007’s Top 10 Technology Products
Sunday, November 25, 2007

The year 2007 had a lot of technology biggies “including big moves from major vendors like Microsoft, Cisco, and Apple, as well as exciting innovations from several upstarts.” So if you were to compile a list of this year’s best technology products it would look a lot like the one right here. Coming in second on the list is OQO. Apparently “business professionals and techies simply loved to stop and ogle at the ‘full PC that fits in your pocket.'” The OQO has received a lot of rave reviews and although some might say that it is just another UMPC, this opinion soon changes when you pick it up.

gPC goes combo with the gOS Developers Kit
Sunday, November 25, 2007

We have all heard about the gPC and its great features. The latest news on this baby is that its motherboard is available in a developers kit. How cool is that! The kit is a basic beginners pack and “includes the board and a gOS disk to get you started.” The processor is a bit slow but the system itself will give you no problems and will take the 2GB DDRII RAM.

Have no worries because “ the VIA C7-D integrated process found on this system draws a max of 20 watts under load...Even for low end processors, the Celeron still takes 86 watts in most cases. This makes the VIA or even the gPC an interesting possibility for a lot of uses.” Read the full review.

New kid on the block
Sunday, November 25, 2007

Yidsun may not be a name that rings any bells when it comes to brand names, but according to Tweak Town, these guys have hit upon an idea of an extremely lightweight headset. The all new Yidsun SP-788 Bluetooth stereo headset “is amazingly light” and although they have not achieved a sleek and stylish look with this one, it is certainly not hideous and the design is very up to date.

This headset uses “weighs 30g with the ear pieces” and although this might seem heavy, you won’t feel all that weighted down when you wear it as it “uses Lithium-polymer batteries.” Take a look for yourself.

Zalman is all powered up with its latest number, namely the ZM850-HP. This new baby has been geared to supply power to the hottest computers with its integrated heatpipes that will cool down your machine. If the 600w was anything to go by then the new 850w and 1000w models ought to be better. Take a look at them at Virtual-Hideout.

CoolerMaster just got cooler. OCC turns the heat on the Hyper212 which has been given two fans “to add additional airflow, where most heatsinks only have one.” Check out the specs.

Driver Heaven has all the news on Hiper’s new MKII units. The HPU-5K880 and the HPU-5B680 are Type-R units but are “entirely different than their predecessors, both in terms of features and appearance.” Read more here.

gOS review
Friday, November 23, 2007

gOS is the Linux operating system that comes preinstalled with the $199 Everex gPC that sold out at WalMart - but will be re-stocked before Christmas. Linux.com have written up a long and detailed review of the operating system from installation (not required with the gPC) to usability and features. There's information in the review that would interest would-be buyers of the gPC and Linux enthusiasts alike.

"I really liked gOS. It's a cute little system with lots of functionality and great looks. It works well and is fast and stable on my laptop. It should work on any computer that any other Linux supports. Enlightenment is an impressive desktop environment, and the iBar is a low-overhead way to blend cool effects with needed functionality."

Just what do you get for $200?
Friday, November 23, 2007

"Does the gPC have enough going for it to make it worth your while? How does it compare to other computers at or near the same price? Seth Fogie examines these issues and more in his report on the gPC, the latest sub-$200 computer to hit the market." This detailed review on Inform IT does exactly what it sets out to do and more. There's even some great tips in there about configuring a gPC and getting it connected to a Windows network. "While we don't want to spoil the ending, it is our overall opinion that the Everex computer is definitely worth your time and money."
