Info in a Flash
Friday, October 26, 2007

OC Modshop has a witty article on the urgency surrounding the IT ethos that keeps us connected to our information 24/7. They're talking about flash memory and their tongue-in-cheek candidness is well worth a read. "We’re happy just to have the content on our system’s hard drive or to have a few hundred CDs and DVDs on the shelf.  Not teens, tweens or our kids.  They want it on their smartphones…on their PMPs…on their iPods (let’s face it Steve’s little wonder is the defacto standard)." Get it all.

European Version of the OQO
Friday, October 26, 2007

Chippy was presented with the European version of the OQO. Known as the model e2 (instead of the model 02), it gets a thorough review and comes up smelling like roses. "Good strong casing, great slide action on the keyboard and very good quality keyboard. Its amazingly small and the desktop stand is just fantastic and turns the device into a usable daily PC which I think could be one of the main advantages of the OQO over other devices." The rest of the review makes good reading too.

Vista's Parental Controls
Friday, October 26, 2007

Wow, it sucks to be a 21st Century kid! If you play up you can have your time limited on the computer, or games restricted, or Internet access banned. Vista's Parental Control options make it easier for parents to know what their kids get up to on the family computer and they can also be used for punishment - and rewards too I guess. In this guide we provide step by step instructions on how to use Vista's Parental Controls, with explanations of all of the different options. Read it here.

Hardware News

tbreak.com has a rather interesting product on their table. It's a fan controller that lets you control fans inside your chassis, and provides temperature readings for the CPU, GPU, HDD, and so on. Now that sounds really cool! The Aerocool Gate Watch II sounds like a sure winner. Tbreak has the specs.

The Tech Zone has something to say about the Trendnet TEW-633GR Wireless N Gigabit Router. It delivers on the 300 Mbps transfer rate that it promises on the box. "The range is quite good, letting me stay connected even when I was half a block away from my house. The build quality and physical appearance are also much improved over the first router." Take a look for yourself.

Trusted Reviews had a less than terrific experience with their product, though. Tthe Iomega StorCenter Wireless Network Storage failed to excite for various reasons. "A low price for a 1TB NAS appliance although this is reflected in the modest level of features on offer. It's easy enough to install and use but performance isn't great and why the firmware upgrade removes the wireless access point mode is beyond us." Is it as bad as they say? Form your own opinion.

Blocking It All Out
Thursday, October 25, 2007

Believe it or not, there are some people out there who think blocking ads is unethical. Of course, that would be from webmasters who depend almost entirely on ad revenue to keep their sites running. They take issue with end users making use of all manner of pop-up blockers and firewalls to block out their ad content, thus limiting their appeal to advertisers. PC Mechanic wonders why the end user should be responsible for keeping the site running in this manner. "It is ultimately the responsibility of the web publisher to keep the site going. The onus shouldn’t be placed on the users. Justifying ad-placement by stating that the end users have the implicit responsibility to uphold the site is not within reason." Get the whole story here.

When More is Less
Thursday, October 25, 2007

Big screens are all the rage these days. If only they weren't so expensive! PC Mechanic believes they have the best solution for people who don't want to break the bank to get a large monitor for their PCs. In fact, they've managed to get hold of a 32-inch screen that only cost $597. That's compared to regular widescreen monitors that range between $1300 and $1800. What's their secret?

Ultra has redesigned its first modular PSU yet again. The Ultra X3 600w PSU is much more affordable than other units in the X3 series, all of which have proven to be terrific performers. "Its price tag [is] nearly half that of the 800W unit directly above it. The big question is however, is it any good?" Driver Heaven has the answers.

The ACRyan Alubox is the latest addition to a range of external storage devices that are currently out in the market. "The AluBox has no internal fan so it does get a bit hot in there. I was using a Raptor harddrive and had no problems whatsoever." The rest of the review has even more useful information. Find it here.

Madshrimps (yes, madshrimps) recently reviewed one very cool video card cooler. "The Zalman VF1000 LED, is a dual slot heatsink/fan video card cooling device with high compatibility in mind, a perfect challenge for 2007's most popular video card, the NVIDIA's 8800 GTS." To find out if this one matches Zalman's other cooling products in quality and performance, follow the link to madshrimps.be.
