| | Should You Purchase an Extended Warranty? Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Whenever I buy a piece of electrical equipment it is always something I deliberate over. Is the warranty just a great way for the manufacturer to get a bit of extra cash or is it a wise insurance? Chances are the thing will break down one day after the warranty expires. This writer on PCMech says he’s worked in tech support for so long you should listen to his opinion! Have a read and see what you think: “In a general sense, my experience has shown desktop machines are usually pretty solid with an occasional hard drive going bad, typically after 3-5 years (judging from the date on the drive label) and on very rare cases a failed power supply. Unfortunately, a couple of times the failed power supply seems to have taken out the motherboard in its final blaze of glory.”
| | How to Speed Up SATA Drives in Vista Friday, April 11, 2008
“Internal SATA hard drives are alot more "permanent" than USB drives, but Windows Vista does not enable advanced write caching by default. You can increase performance of your hard drives by implementing a little-known feature. You could potentially lose data in a power outage, so either use a UPS or enable advanced write caching at your own risk.” Oooh, risk. What fun! Check it out here at OCModShop.

| SP1 Evaluation Thursday, April 10, 2008
So, Vista Service Pack 1 is well and truly out. That’s given the lads at Tech Report the chance to really find out what it does for you in an average day of use. They start off with a re-cap of what it includes: “Along with these welcome speed boosts, the new service pack brings a very long list of reliability, security, and power-saving improvements. That list is a little too long to sum up here, but users can look forward to everything from more consistent hard drive spin-downs, which should improve battery life on notebooks, to better driver stability in default drivers, and new application programming interfaces to help developers write more secure apps and better anti-malware tools.” Sounds good, keep reading to see what their final conclusion on SP1 is.
| | The Ten Minute Mod Wednesday, April 09, 2008
So many people just buy a fancy PC case these days instead of doing a bit of modding themselves. You don’t have to have a workshop full of tools and nights to spare. Sometimes all it takes if ten minutes according to this guide on Bit-tech: "But, the argument of pre-mod or mod isn't what this is all about - it's about those cases that you throw together in a half hour, or build up for a buddy. Those things that you want to look clean, a little bit of bling, a quick splash of colour and light. And that's why I think we need to look at some of these quick solutions and little details that can make bog standard into beautifully built.”
