Tuesday, March 20, 2007

"Like many PC users, you’ve probably been looking at Windows Vista since its January release and wondering whether you want to take the jump and buy it. Assuming your computer can handle its demands, and your wallet or plastic can stretch to the price, it’s tempting. But there’s one vital question – can you easily migrate your data to Vista without spending days tearing out your hair? The answer, happily, is yes." Read on at DigitalTrends.com.

Video: Interview with the creator of the cattle gate PC
Friday, March 16, 2007

Last week we visited the Beef Spectacular Show in Dubbo. Kattle Gear Australia had their cattle stations on display, including their automated system. The designer of the EPIA based system, Leonard Hill from Belvoir IT, was kind enough to allow us to film him talking us through how the system works. He is a very friendly well spoken Aussie bloke with a real passion for how x86 architecture can be utilized in such an unlikely environment as cattle yards. He even talks about UMPCs out in paddocks. It's a very interesting story. Take a look.

Hard drives explained
Thursday, March 15, 2007

My Dad's cousin's husband rocked up yesterday with a PC John built for him over five years ago. "I need more memory" he said. "I had to compress everything and I still don't have enough room."
"Oh you mean you need a bigger hard drive?" I ventured.
"Is that what remembers everything?" he asked. Since my Dad's cousin's husband first got the PC he purchased a digital camera and the 20GB hard drive just doesn't provide enough room anymore. But a 20GB PATA drive 5 years ago was no slouch. How times have changed. Bit-tech.net have put together an article which explains hard drive technology. The article pays special attention to the latest in hard drive features like NCQ. It's well worth a read.

The first fondle of an OQO model 02
Thursday, March 15, 2007

The OQO model 02 UMPC that was launched in February is still rare as hen's teeth but they are apparently cropping up in electronics stores here and there. Here is one report of a sly touch and feel by Mike Cane: "That keyboard! My God! It looks gorgeous to begin with. And the feel is just marvelous. OQO got the keyboard right. The keys have great feedback, the spacing is just right, and they feel like they’re made of metal. No cheap feel at all, no wobble of the keys in their sockets. The trackstick also has a great feel. It’s fast and responsive." Read on.

GPS software for UMPCs
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Last week on our trip across Australia we used GPS software CoPilot on one of the UMPCs. It certainly saved us from any husband/wife banter over navigational decisions. GotABeMobile.com have compared a few different GPS software options, including CoPilot 9. Choosing GPS software specifically for a UMPC is a little different to choosing GPS software for a palm pilot or laptop because of the screen size and what resolutions look best and give you the most usable space. Don't forget to check out our little video of CoPilot on the UMPC here.

OQO video review
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Another blogger, "Mr Just Blaze" has produced a relaxed two part video review of an OQO model 02. In the video he connects to the Sprint network and surfs the net, plays MP3s and AVI files and generally explains what it's like to use the device. At the beginning of the first video you might think you've clicked on the wrong link. He starts by talking about some Fight Night game or something but wait a couple of minutes and then he gets into the OQO review. Check it out here.
