The Wow Factor
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Dennis Moore gets more wows for his OQO. One thoroughly pleased new convert to the OQO model 02 offers his (naturally, positive) feedback on the UMPC. "I just got my 02 today and I am extremely impressed. I got a new 1.6 120gb with Sprint and Windows XP. I've owned a lot of cool gadgets before but this one is on a whole other level." For more on the rave, catch Moore's blog.

Mobile Journalism
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Rob Beschizza is unimpressed with the Reuters/Nokia concept of a mobile journalism kit. The kit will include the Nokia N95 camera phone, a Bluetooth keyboard, a tripod, and a mic that plugs into the handset. The idea is to carry your office with you without the restrictive bulk and weight of a full sized laptop. Beschizza and several other tech bloggers have a different take. "While the kit makes for great news-gathering, it looks like a poor news-writing setup. Producing ready-to-edit copy — let alone self-published or blogged reports — could be a nightmare with only a cellphone to work on." Read all about it here.

OCC goes over the Sapphire HD 2600Pro. Though it doesn't meet (or break) benchmark records or let users run a full gamut of visual media, it does let users stretch the capabilities of their systems. "HD 2600Pro put up a good fight and with some tweaking, you can find a happy medium between image quality and performance." Next up, OCC will be taking a look at DX10 games with this particular card. Keep an eye out for that one. In the meantime, take a look at the review thus far.

Burnout PC talks about the features of the Revoltec Zirconium case. Its great to look at with its sleek design and blue LEDs. "Although the case is a bit cheaper, it surely doesn't have to be less good than other cases that are twice the price of the Zirconium. The Zirconium has the same internals as higher end cases and the finishing touches are just as good. No sharp edges to be found and no vibrations from hard drives either." Catch the review here.

TweakTown gets a crack at the Rosewill RCX-Z4. This will be the first CPU cooler to be tested in their new T.E.C.C (Thermal Environment Control Chamber). If that doesn't sound familiar, take some time to read their introductory article. Otherwise, head on out to Tweak Town to see how the Rosewill RCX-Z4 made out.

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Uberclock PC's Thomas Glen has a chat with Driver Heaven about Uberclock's goals and direction. It's a small company, but expansion is definitely on the cards. "We're probably going to focus on PC gaming exclusively for at least the next twelve months. It all depends on how well we do at the gaming desktops." Gamers will want to keep an eye on this company's activities for a while. Sit in on the rest of the interview.

Folklore: Breaking the Mould
Saturday, October 27, 2007

Tired of dungeons and dragons or WW2 games? Gaming Heaven reviews Folklore -- a PS3 title now in the market -- with positive results. "Folklore might not be the most advertised PS3 title on the market, but it sure fits the tag when it comes to unconventional fantasy gaming." So if its not about rescuing princesses from dragons or saving the country, what is it about? Get the answers here.

WiFi on the OQO
Saturday, October 27, 2007

Bjorn Stromberg of ultramobilelife.com showcased a cute little video guide (with subtitles) on enabling WiFi on the OQO model 02 or model e2. They encourage viewers to leave their thoughts. Plenty of good feedback will likely bring more of the same in the near future. Check out the video.

OLPC Powered by Livestock
Saturday, October 27, 2007

The OLPC project has decided that progress needn't make us forget our roots. They're currently working on the idea of an innovative source of power for the XO laptops -- cows. Arjun Sarwal wrote, "We plan to drive a dynamo (taken from an old Fiat) through a system of belts and pulleys using cows/cattle." The idea is to make use of the natural resources freely available in the villages near Mumbai, India. As sunlight tends to be sporadic, cows seemed to be the next best option. Find out more here.

OCC reviews the ADATA Vitesta Extreme Edition DDR2 800 Memory module. Apparently heat is a big issue that needs to be taken care of. "With the XMS2 and the Ballistix RAM, I could touch them my fingers and be fine, but the ADATA ram was too hot to keep my fingers on. This did not seem to affect the performance at all, but I would recommend that you have some sort of active cooling on the modules so that you avoid the chance of them overheating. With both sets installed, I could feel the heat radiating so much that it was enveloping the CPU cooler and might cause a problem with the CPU temps over longterm use if not cooled properly." It doesn't look good for the memory module. Is the performance much better?

Virtual Hideout has a motherboard from abit that was designed with home entertainment users in mind. "The AN-M2HD has an onboard HDMI connection for some of today's newer monitors/TV's. The AN-M2HD utilizes the new NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV North Bridge and NVIDIA nForce 630a South Bridge chips." It's also really quiet, which is great for a home theater. Here's the review.

Tweak Town takes on the Leadtek Winfast PX8800 Ultra Leviathan, despite being unimpressed with Ultra's previous products. "The high price tag, lack of availability and the high price tag meant that no one could really justify the high price tag. Oh, and did I mention it was very expensive?" Could the Leadtek be much better and will it compete with the XFX 8800 Ultra XXX edition?
