A web of payments and legal battles
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

"Sometimes, this industry can be as entertaining as a soap opera, and for all the same reasons. The "he said, she said" over DirectX 10 drivers, the CPU performance crown or the next optical format for your living room; so often, battle royales like these between industry giants are fought in the public arena of PR launches, demos and benchmarks. Which is why it's so much more entertaining when corporate intrigue lights up someone's hand in the cookie jar before supper. Oops." Bit-tech.net takes a look at the tangle between Immersion, Microsoft and Sony.

Say cheese
Monday, June 25, 2007

A couple of weeks ago when I was in Taiwan for Computex, we went to the Firing Squad party. Fata1ty was there - probably the most renowned fps player ever. He was just amazed when he saw Quake III running on the OQO model 02 UMPC. He just had to try it for himself. I did post a photo the day after the party but now I've come across this one from TheTechZone.com, which is a great shot. Looks like it's love at first sight for Fatal1ty :)

Car PCs - build-in or take-away?
Monday, June 25, 2007

I have Google Alerts set up for key words that could alert me to news stories for VIA Arena. One of them, not surprisingly, is EPIA. Google alerts don't just find words used on professional sites, but blogs as well. Today I got a link to someone's Live Journal post about their Car PC project which they have named Grease Monkey. The creator is very enthusiastic. Reading the blog, I feel like it's the year 2002 again, when Mini-ITX boards first came to market. It's lovely that new people are still using EPIA boards for mods like car PCs - but where are the pre=assembled car PCs? Using the small footprint of Mini-ITX to put PCs where they couldn't go before - like cars - was one of the obvious evolutionary paths that we all saw back in 2002. I had expected to be able to buy a complete car PC at any well known car accessory store by now. But it seems you still have to build them yourself.

I think security is a big factor in why car PCs haven't taken off. I've heard the comment many times before that unless your DVD player is built into the dash, with the screens built into the seats, you're just asking for a thief to rip it all out. Apparently, when screens are built into headrests, thieves just take the whole headrest.  For entertaining kids in the back seat on a long journey, UMPCs are a good solution, because when the journey has come to an end, you don't leave any of the equipment in the car for thieves. Furthermore, you can use for other things as well, out of the car.

QUALCOMM and VIA Telecom Enter Into a Licensing Agreement
Monday, June 25, 2007

"Under the terms of the worldwide agreement, QUALCOMM has granted VIA Telecom rights to incorporate the BREW software layer into the CDMA2000 chipsets that it sells to its wireless device manufacturer customers. VIA Telecom initially plans to make its CDMA chipsets, featuring the BREW Client, available in July 2007. VIA Telecom will integrate the BREW Client in its CDMA products, offering its growing roster of device manufacturer partners a line of chipsets that have BREW pre-ported to them." Games that can be modded
Monday, June 25, 2007

A while back, we revisited some of the great games of old that could really use a spit-shine and a re-release. Of course, despite all of our wishes, hopes and dreams, the past is the past. Those games (and others so wonderfully pointed out) will always remain in our memories for what they are, but that got me thinking...what about the games that we love because of what we're able to make them?" Bit-tech.net goes on to tell us about the top five most moddable games.

The novice vlog
Friday, June 22, 2007

We have been trying to get one video per week out on VIA Arena for the past two months - and we have hit that goal square on the head every week, until now. Actually to be more specific, we've averaged one per week, we are yet to attain the objective of posting a new video consistently on the same day each week. I am waiting on a shipment from Taiwan of some lovely goods for the production of one video. I was hoping the two little goodies would have arrived already.

Another back-up plan was to film a video of our eldest daughter playing kid games on the OQO. She's pretty excited about it. I have put Chuzzle on it, which runs great at 800x480 and looks gorgeous. I also thought we'd demonstrate a "girly" game and a game targetted at boys. With three girls in the house we have a pretty impressive collection of Barbie games but, ironically, the only Barbie game we don't have is the only one that we can find a no CD key for. For a "boy's" game, similarly, we are having great trouble in finding no CD cracks for car racing games. John bought a pack of Atari style games but it requires 800x600 resolution, so you can't see the options and menu properly.

Late last week we received the double capacity battery for the OQO model 02, a digital pen and the hard carry case. But a video of me, or John, or both of us just holding up each item would be boring. So I thought I would set up the unit and film it next to the stop watch playing media files - using the slim line standard battery and then the double capacity battery. I would then speed up the video (even though I've never done that before - but I'd figure it out), set it to music and report on the real capacity of each battery. Good plan. Not so good is not checking that the video camera battery is fully charged. I don't know when it stopped filming but the double capacity OQO battery lasted for 3 hours and 8 minutes - the digital video camera battery didn't. I am afraid we are just novice film makers here, with a whole lot of other taks as well. Speaking of which ... it's weekly report time. Maybe we'll get two videos out next week.

New rugged UMPC coming
Friday, June 22, 2007

This post on Engadget.com implies that Samwell were showing off a new UMPC at Computex. If so, I'm sorry I missed it. "Joining the slew of other handhelds computers that surfaced at Computex is the Ruggedbook PC657 from Samwell, which does indeed pack a beefy shell to protect the innards from whatever comes its way. The seven-inch UMPC includes a 800 x 600 resolution touchscreen, a 1.2GHz VIA C7M processor, Windows XP Professional, a PCMCIA slot, SDIO / MMC slots, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a fingerprint scanner, and an integrated camera." The unit looks a lot like the Tablet Kiosk TufTab. Price and availability details are yet to be disclosed.

Ubiquio 701 UMPC reviewed
Friday, June 22, 2007

At a bargain price of 580 pounds, TrustedReviews.com weighed in the good and bad of this UMPC (which is almost identical to the Tablet Kisok eo) and came up with a rating of 7/10. "It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design of the thing. The controls have been well thought out and make the device easy to use – probably more so than Samsung's Q1 and certainly more so than the smaller, lighter keyboard-equipped Sony UX1. I really liked the way every control fell to hand (or thumb) and was easy to access and understand."
