The Logitech G9 Mouse
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

John just loves new peripherals and gadgets and he often rambles on about their features to me over dinner (how romantic!). Having just edited and placed his review of the Logitech G9 Lazer mouse online, I can see why this one has really impressed him. He says it’s the most fully featured customizable mouse he’s ever come across and I reckon he’s right!

You can swap the cover (and therefore the width) as well as the weight of the thing, plus the software gives you access to change the speed and the scroll and buttons in more ways than I’ve ever seen before. So there’s only one question I have left – how come I don’t have one since I’m the one with mild RSI and could use a goog quality mouse?!

Optical vs Laser Mice
Thursday, April 17, 2008

“Your mouse and keyboard are your two primary means of interaction with your PC and as such today we take a look at a long standing debate over optical vs laser for mouse technology. Which is better, how does each work, and why should I choose one over the other? We attempt to answer these questions in our overview of this subject.”

Interesting. Just recently John got himself a wired mouse instead of a cordless one. He was sick of having to swap out the batteries all the time. I must admit, I often forget to place my cordless mouse on its charger and have to use an old mouse with a wire while it charges up. So there’s another mouse debate! But the debate about optical vs laser is over at Techwarelabs.

Movie Maker Basic Guide
Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Windows Vista (well most editions anyway) come with Windows Movie Maker version 6.0. The program is pretty easy to use to create simple things like a DVD of family photos set to music, possibly with a narration over the top. You can also do simple edits and transitions of video footage. To create a true amateur masterpiece, you’d have to upgrade to a more advanced video editing package but for the simple fun stuff, Movie Maker does the job. To get started, check out our new guide which shows you how to do all the basics, step by step.

Vista Loves Hard Drives
Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Sometimes I get up in the morning and come downstairs to make a cup of tea and find John’s laptop, which runs Vista, sitting there not-so-silently humming away. When I question why he didn’t turn the thing off overnight, John has often said that “Vista was doing something”. It seems that Vista has a bit of a love affair with hard drives. It often seems to be doing things and the hard drive activity lights on Vista systems get a good workout. Why is this? PC Stats has investigated:

“Windows Vista uses your computer's hard disk drive(s) much more intensively and extensively than Windows XP ever did. This results in some truly disturbing disk thrashing at times, even on high-end computers. It has eventually become apparent that most of this is by design. The disk thrashing action is the result of processes that work behind the scenes and does not affect overall performance much, unless your system is low on RAM. The long term affects of wear and tear on your hard drive though, are another thing entirely.”
