Steve Paine continues his journey across Germany on a bike that has solar panels to power his Samsung Q1b UMPC. In his latest blog post, he tests out just how efficient, or as it turns out, how inefficient, the battery charge is from the solar panels. Although he manages to get a couple of hours use from the UMPC after three hours of charging, there is a lot of power lost between the solar panels and the UMPC's battery and then the battery and the actual device. "It's thanks to devices like UMPCs that this is project is at all possible because I really doubt it would have worked with even a 'power saving' notebook PC. " His blog contains a lot of interesting information. It highlights how much room for improvement there is when it comes to charging electronic devices using solar panels. |
