The first year of the UMPC
Back in February 2006, almost one year ago, I got to see a UMPC in action for the first time at E3. VIA was demonstrating a sample on their booth. Although I didn't get any personal time with it, I thought that it did look very interesting. At that stage I wasn't too sure where in the market it was going to fit and I wondered, who would really buy a handheld personal computer? Could it possibly replace a notebook? I knew it wasn't going to replace a desktop. I have my laptop which I can use for gaming and surfing the internet and as a movie and DVD player. I also have my PSP which I use for both gaming and movies. So although the UMPC looked interesting at the time, it really didn't excite me that much. Then at Computex in June, I got to spend a bit more time using the product and hearing other people's ideas about it. I was lucky enough to be able to take one home. The more I used it the more I fell in love with it and the more potential I realized the ultra portable device market has. Read more.
