| | Driving the Emergence of Mobility 2.0 at VIA Technology Forum 2007 Thursday, May 31, 2007 Next week I'll be in Taiwan to attend the annual Computex trade show and the VIA Technology Forum. Details are now emerging about what I'll be hearing about - and then reporting to you:"VIA President and CEO, Wenchi Chen will open the morning keynote session, laying out VIA’s vision for the ultra mobile lifestyle, and will be followed by Otto Berkes, chief architect of Microsoft’s ultra mobile PC campaign, who makes a welcome return to VTF addressing the issues of software and design innovation in this space. Other keynote speakers including Packard Bell will expand on this theme further, covering different aspects of ultra mobility and giving examples of key upcoming designs and technologies. One of the two specialist technology tracks in the afternoon, “Enabling Ultra Mobility”, will look in greater detail at the technologies and infrastructure required to fuel innovation in this market, with speakers from a range of organizations including the Taiwan Government’s Department of Information Management, international telco GTNT, and mobile security specialists Stonewall Networks." | Worldwide TV over the Internet Thursday, May 31, 2007 I love Sci-Fi TV shows and anything that's got an interesting story line. At the moment I watch Battlestar Galactica, LOST, Stargate Atlantis and Heroes. I know that for Battlestar Galactica at least, if you live in the US then you can download the episode from the Internet after it has gone to air. Not so for Australians - and most other parts of the world. TV via the Internet scarcely exists. So I found this article on Tweaktown.com very interesting: "Joost (pronounced Juiced), a peer to peer (P2P) program for streaming video over the Internet, developed by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the guys who originally developed Skype. The development into an invitation only Beta has gone incredibly fast, as the real development of Joost only started last year. Some 150 people have been working on getting Joost to the stage it is today and it already works incredibly well. As a video on demand service it still lacks a few things, mostly a wider array of programs, as the content is quite limited, although it depends what you are looking for." I had a look at the Joost site and found that most of the channels are worldwide. The only catch at the moment is that it's in beta stage and you need to be invited into the program. I'd love an invite if anyone is already a member?! | |

| UMPCs shining through era of miniaturization Wednesday, May 30, 2007 "Today, when cell phones, smart phones, PDAs and notebook computers are as common at the corner coffee shop as they are in an office set-up, the ranks of the mobile workforce have formulated some opinions about the ideal mobile device. The only problem may be that each worker’s ideal device has a different set of functions from the next worker’s. Result: having a mass favorite is close to impossible. But a few companies think they know what legions of consumers and mobile workers really want. Their answer — the ultra-mobile personal computer (UMPC). Smaller than a notebook, bigger than a PDA.." | $100 PC for back-ups Wednesday, May 30, 2007 "Zonbu, the $100 Linux-based PC you can get if you sign up for a two-year online storage plan, isn't just a silent, low-power secondary home PC: this thing has hack potential up the wazoo. While the Zon's a capable machine by itself, the $100 deal is designed for easy consumer operation by people who already have a main PC, and it isn't customizable as a result: you can't install your own software on it or do much of anything else to bugger it up." Sounds like a good option for a hassle free back-up plan for the not so savy PC user. | |
| An Inconvenient Truth about your PC gaming Wednesday, May 30, 2007 Using a cool "power thingy" (I gotta get me one of those) the Tweaktown.com team have taken measurements on the power draw of different popular games. Some games are more environmentally friendly to play than others. Interesting stuff. | |

| Half-Life and Counter-Strike on the OQO UMPC Monday, May 28, 2007
A week or so ago we released a video about playing World of WarCraft on the OQO model 02 UMPC. That video went nuts on YouTube and the comments section has also been pretty busy. The number one question was - what about fps? So here are the answers - Half-Life and Counter-Strike in the palm of your hand! | |
| Cheap UMPC feels good Monday, May 28, 2007 T3.co.uk say: "Their UMPC, priced at a very impressive £800, squeezes in a touch screen, direction buttons, a touchpad and stylus, as well as a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard with dedicated shortcut keys for wireless functions and a webcam. Despite its reasonable price tag, Medion’s UMPC feels anything but cheap. Sure, it’s not quite as solid as Sony’s offering, but then it’s a clear £1,200 cheaper." You can also watch a video of it. | |
