There are very few games on PC that impress me at the moment but Call of Duty is one of them. The whole game takes place in WWII. The game is all about exchanging gunfire, knocking down an enemy and proceeding to the next level. Mr. Chris, one of our forum regulars, loves this game and he’s shared his opinion about it in this forum post. Why do you love or despise COD?

“Call of Duty is a blast! Game looks so good, all the graphics are top notch, especially the outdoors stuff. Weapons models are very accurate. There are a few tough spots so far (I just made it to Red Square) but nothing major. “

Intel Offers Linux Certification, Rebuffing Microsoft Certification
Wednesday, July 23, 2008

This morning, I was bit surprised when I saw a news on APCmag where they have reported that Intel is endorsing professionals Linux certifications, snubbing the old Microsoft certification. This news made me wonder if Intel has turned out to have a conscious about open source or do they have some other reasons? Whatever the reason is, it is a good news for Linux lovers and professionals.

“Intel makes its living by selling processors, and with the established worldwide market for desktops and laptops having almost reached saturation, tapping into new markets is a matter of survival. And the operating system that will power those next billion computers is increasingly seen as Linux: an OS that’s free, open, extensible and has lesser hardware requirements than Windows.”

Hi-Fi Birthday Cake
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Birthdays are all about friends, gifts, parties, and delicious cakes – and even that’s moving to hi-tech. If you have an uber-geeky kid, you can make their birthday even more memorable. Instead of ordinary wax candles, now you can use LED lights as candles! The interesting part of this cake is that your kid can blow out the LEDs. Instructables has a recipe for preparing this DIY electronic birthday cake in five simple steps.

“The circuit for this project consists of 20 LEDs arranged in Charlieplexed fashion connected to 5 I/O pins of an 8-pin microcontroller. I used Tiny45 microcontroller. I chose a few colors of LEDs for the birthday candles. I used red, blue, green and yellow LEDs. The circuit is powered with four 1.2V batteries (NiCD or NiMH).”

jDome - The Next Generation of Vapourware
Location: BlogsJohn Gatt's Babblings
Posted by: John GattTuesday, May 13, 2008 1:28 PM

Earlier on this year, I covered the benefits of widescreen vs pan and scan gaming. The most interesting thing about widescreen gaming is the field of view it provides. This guy, John Nilsson, is trying to take that field of view one step further wit the use of larger resolutions projected onto a dome. jDome is his new invention which has been patented but is till in prototype stage. Although this guy doesn’t make a great video presenter I do find the product, the jDome, to be kinda interesting, although it may be more of a novelty than a practical application. The room required to set this up is a lot more than most people would have available in their average lounge room or study.

The idea is fairly simple. If you’ve ever stood behind a projector screen you would have noticed that the image shines through the screen and is mirrored on the other side. If your projector has the ability to mirror the image, kind of like a rear projection TV, then you’re able to project onto a dome type screen, sit inside and have the game displayed around you. There are a couple of downfalls I can see – without proper ingame support, things like the HUD (heads up display) will be oddly positioned in the bottom section. Obviously, games like World of Warcraft, which he mentions on the site, are not cut out for jDome, since they are not from the 1st person point of view. FPS games on the other hand are.

I suppose a better idea might be to make a semi-circle display, or even a curved rectangle. But a complete dome falls short due to the bottom never being displayed correctly in games. Even if you consider flight sims, the cockpit instruments would be skewed when projected at the bottom of the dome. And also, to get the proper positioning, the cockpit controls would be under where you’re keyboard’s meant to be, if you go by the positioning he uses in his demo video.

I have a feeling this is vapourware – but it’s interesting to see none the less.

The iDome does the same thing but higher quality and no distortion.
http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/projection/UnityiDome/
This is truely a 180 degree of visual information, the jDome is 120 at best.
Of course it's somewhat more expense .... still just one projector.
