Gaming and Me

Consoles for me has been the pivotal entertainment source for the last 15 years, from battling against Ganon in The Legend of Zelda, to being a stormtrooper in Star Wars: Battlefront. A few consoles, as is a given are the ones that gave me the most enjoyment of all my years of gaming.

Starting off, I remember going over to my cousins house playing his NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). The ability to be a real hero, whether it be in Zelda, or a plumbing Goomba hopping Italian named Mario was mind blowing. I can remember sitting up to all hours doing nothing but staring at a television screen pushing buttons on a rectangle piece of plastic in my hand… Sounds boring doesn’t it?

I suppose I’m in a lucky generation having the opportunity to see computer games evolve the way it has. I’m still chuckling to myself how I got so much enjoyment out of such, as is now. A dull game. A few years down the track I got a SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) which I made extensive long use out of until the real money maker and generation changer came out. The PlayStation.

HOLY CRAP how excited I was when I first played Crash Bandicoot. The graphics were hot, the storyline made NO sense (A freakin talking bandicoot WTF?) and the design 3D engine made me want to crap my pants. But alas, strange I didn’t get the same thoughts for the generation to follow… In terms of choosing a console. The PS2 and Xbox were released and I was faced with a tough decision (Still being in high school with little to no money). Do I stick with a console that’s served me extremely well for a large part of my gaming life, or take a different direction and try what Microsoft had to offer.

The decision almost drove me to the edge of insanity (What? I’m serious about my video games!!). But reluctantly and decisively I chose the Xbox and haven’t looked back since.
Later on a family member purchased the PS2 and I had a few games of Final Fantasy, played the latest Grand Turismo and all the other neat new sequels to games I played on its predecessor. But I stuck with the Xbox… Why? Well if you can figure that out I’ll give you a gold medal! Halo was probably the biggest reason I can think of at the moment, the game had an awesome storyline and the first person graphics were breathtaking. Maybe it was my mistake to play Halo before the PS2? Dunno, but something about that game made me feel all fuzzy inside and I felt the need to continue to buy games for the Xbox to see what else peeked my interest.

Then came the generation we’re in now and from that we received the new Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii. Wasn’t a really tough decision to be honest on what console I was going to follow this time round so I snapped up a 360 as soon as it was released. The choice in games for this generation is widely spread through all consoles, as in we barely see any “Xbox Only” stickers on games anymore. Sure there are a few, but not as much as we had for the original Xbox. Which in turn brings the argument, WHY do we choose to follow and support a certain console when 95% of the games are on all three!!??

I’m putting my vote on the controller. I mean… Microsoft sure do know how to make a COMFY controller!!!

A combined collection of my families consoles
