Introduction

Mozilla is well known for its web browser Firefox, but they make another application as well. Mozilla’s Thunderbird is an email client that is open source, free of cost and platform independent. Thunderbird also acts as a news client and RSS reader. It can replace the functionality of Windows Outlook/Outlook Express – but how easy is it to use? With this guide, anyone will be able to use it.

The first version of Thunderbird was released on December 7, 2004 and with the latest stable version (2.0.0.16), Thunderbird has become a popular alternative to other email clients. Since its first release it has been downloaded more than 67 million times and is available in 37 different languages.

Download and Installation

Mozilla Thunderbird is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux and can be downloaded from the official website of Mozilla. For this article, I have chosen the Windows version 2.0.0.16.

Once Thunderbird has downloaded, locate the downloaded file and click twice on the file in order to begin the setup.

Click on the Next button.

Accept the End-User Software License Agreement [EULA] and click Next.

Choose the preferred setup type (Standard and Custom) and click on Next.

Click on the Finish button to launch Thunderbird.

When Thunderbird is launched for the first time, a New Account Setup Wizard it will appear similar to this:

As you can see in the picture above, there are a total four options. Email account, RSS News & Blogs, Gmail and Newsgroup account. I’ll show you how to configure your account using these four options.
