Google Finance

Today’s stock markets can move on little notice. If you want to keep up to date on your stock’s activity, there are many online financial portals where you can go to find up-to-the minute quotes. Google Finance may be a new destination for all your financial market needs. The site provides easy to read financial data for the stock market, news from inside the business world, and an extensive history for each stock.

The Google Finance portal compares to Yahoo! Finance, MSN MoneyCentral, and many stockbroker’s news and information sites. The service is a portal to the financial world and can be configured to suit your individual needs. Do you buy and sell stocks? Then you may be interested in creating a Portfolio on Google Finance.

Quick Note: Google does not act as a stockbroker, but merely as an information portal for stocks, currency, and finance.

Beginning to Use Google Finance

To personalize your Google Finance experience you need to have a Google Account. This only takes a few minutes and grants you access to all Google applications. To setup a Google Account, select the Sign In button in the upper right corner, and then Create an account.

Once you have a Google Account, you can begin personalizing your Google Finance experience. Let’s start by creating a Portfolio.

  1. Open Google Finance in your web browser. http://finance.google.com
  2. Select Portfolio from the first section of the page.
  3. Type the stock ticker for each stock you want listed in your portfolio. Entries can be separated by commas or by returns.

  4. Click Save Portfolio.

Once you save the portfolio, Google takes you to a screen where you can view the stock’s activity for the day. Any stocks that the service could not find would be removed at this point. Once you add your first stocks to your portfolio, you will be taken to the My Portfolio page.

The My Portfolio page displays news items for the stocks you’ve added, upcoming events for the stock, and a form where you can add new stocks to your portfolio page.

Quick Tip: Upcoming events can be added to your Google Calendar with one click. This is just another reason why Google’s free services are a great way to stay informed and connected.

To see more detailed information on each stock, simply click the stock ticker. This takes you to a more detailed page, where you can research each stock’s history. We will talk more on that in a moment.

When you return to the main Google Finance page, the Portfolio section will be filled with quotes of your favorite stocks.
