Introduction

Millions of people have become accustomed to using BitTorrent clients to obtain and share digital content and I’ll explain what BitTorrent is and how it works in a moment. So many people end up using the one tired old BitTorrent client for years on end and if that’s you, it’s time to look around and see what has developed recently.

Vuze is a BitTorrent client that’s looks like a cross between YouTube and iTunes. It includes it’s own large network of high quality content and channels as well as the features of a BitTorrent client that a long time torrent user will be accustomed to. But the interface is so lovely to use, even a newbie to the P2P world will feel at home. Plus you can publish your own content, share files on a preferential basis with friends, subscribe to RSS … it’s a long list of features, so let’s get into it.

BitTorrent and Its Mode of Working

File sharing is the exchange of digital files through a network, where the files are either stored or supplied between users. P2P file sharing refers to the sharing of digital files over a network that follows a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol.

BitTorrent is an example of peer-to-peer file sharing protocol which can be used to distribute a huge amount of data in an extremely well-organized way. It is a common, useful and simple way to download and upload very big files. BitTorrent protocol is the sharing of a file between a donor and recipient. That’s the simple way of looking at it, but there is more to it than that.

The file is provided by the donor, the “seed”, while anyone who downloads that file is known as the “peer”. Each peer who has downloaded some part of the file will then also become a seed for other peers for the part of file they have finished downloading. This means that a peer who is downloading the file will become the seed for other peers too. If the first peer finishes downloading, they become an additional seed for supplying the file to other peers and similarly, other peers also become seeds for supplying their partially downloaded file to another set of peers. Only a single seed is required to distribute files between lots of peers. The addition of more and more seeds enhances the speed of downloading. This protocol reduces the dependency on the original file provider.

Azureus and Vuze

A torrent is a file or group of files that is exchanged through the BitTorrent. A BitTorrent client uses BitTorrent protocol to distribute contents, download and upload files and to contribute to BitTorrent file distribution. Azureus is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients, boasting an impressive list of features as well as supplying a platform for searching and sharing high quality content using BitTorrent.

Vuze is a new name for the Azureus BitTorrent client. The Azureus was renamed Vuze with the release version 3.1 on June 16, 2008. The Azureus client engine remains the same.  Vuze, Inc. is the company responsible for developing and supporting the Vuze BitTorrent application and the Vuze HD Network. The Vuze HD network is a huge network of videos, music and games, with a lot of high-definition content, mostly available free of cost but from for sale and even for rent.

Overview

Vuze is an online entertainment portal that allows users to download, upload, watch, publish and share high quality videos, games and music files. The quality of videos is similar to DVD and high definition quality content. Hundreds and thousands of videos, movies, games, music, TV shows etc are available for download. And this high quality content can be discovered easily by browsing through the channels and categories of videos, music and games. Another valuable platform it provides is for publishing your content, including complete control to monitor or modify it.

Vuze has a streamlined user interface with easy to use features and an eye catching library. The library of Vuze not only has loads of videos arranged in different channels and categories but also continuously streaming content. It also gives you options to customize your content search by subscribing to favorite video categories’ RSS feeds. You can also create an account and then add friends and share contents with your friends and even send instant messages to them from within the client. The search result automatically filters adult content and gives you refined results.

I found Vuze so slow and bloated, I ditched it and switched to µTorrent...
