Adblock Plus 0.7.5.5 (33,384,877 total downloads)

If your are annoyed with all the banners and ads which eat up a lot of bandwidth and make pages take a longer time to download,  Adblock Plus is for you. After installing this add-on, you can easily block irritating, bandwidth-greedy ads and banners. Once configured, they won’t download again and you can experience faster browsing! Moreover you can choose a filter subscription to block most advertisements automatically.

Once installed, follow these steps to block ads:

Open the website that has ads you want to block.

Click on the Adblock Plus icon which is located in the top right hand corner of Firefox.

Adblock will display a list of blockable items on the current page

From the list, if you click on any item link , Adblock will highlight the image on the page so that you can see which item you have highlighted to be blocked.

To block any item, right click on the item link from the list and click on Block this Item. This will open the Adblock plus Preference window.

Click on OK to exit or click on the Add Filter button to create filters.

A filter is nothing but set of user specified rules using Wildcards, Regular expressions, Exception rules etc. For example if a site contains an image with the following path,

http://www.acdef.com/banner123.gif

You can block the image but sometimes a banner will still be displayed on the page because the portion of the name “123” is random number which keeps changing. So to overcome this kind of situation you can set up a filter such as

http://www.acdef.com/banner*.gif

This filter will block all the gif images that have a name starting with word banner.
