It brought a smile to my face when I experienced the awesome mouse gestures of the Opera browser. You can perform almost all the basic web browsing functions with just few mouse combination clicks.
| Function |
Action to be performed |
| Back |
Hold your left mouse button and click the right button |
| Forward |
Hold your right mouse button and click the left button |
| New tab |
Hold the right button and straight drag down |
| Close Tab |
Hold the right button and drag in L shape |
| Zooming |
Hold the Ctrl button and use your scroll your mouse scroll button |
| Tab Scroll |
Hold the right click and scroll the mouse’s scroll button |
Hotclick Feature
Like mouse gesture options, the Hotclick option is also a great feature. When you double click on any word in a page, the Hotclick feature brings a menu with various useful options: Copy, Copy to Note Speak, Search, Search With, Dictionary Encyclopedia, Translate, Go to Web Address and Send by Mail. In the following example, I double clicked on the word ‘innovative’ and it displays a menu similar to this:
This feature is similar to those released by Microsoft in Internet Explorer 8.
Trash Can
Opera has a feature which provides access to web pages which had been closed earlier. The histories of recently closed pages are saved in something called the Trash Can, located at the right hand corner of the Tab bar.
Customizable Panel Manager
Opera includes, a customizable Panel Manager, previously called Hotlist, which gives one-click access to functions related to web browsing and emailing such as: Bookmarks, Contacts, Widgets, Search, Windows, History, Transfers, Links, Mail, Info, Chats and Notes. Here’s a summary:
| Panel Manager Options |
Descriptions |
| Bookmarks |
Launches the Bookmark window which lists the bookmarked pages as well as allows you to add and delete bookmarks |
| Contacts |
Interfaces with the an email client address book |
| Widgets |
Provides add-on utilities for the browser |
| Search |
Provides quick access to variety of search engines |
| Windows |
Displays a summary of all tabs open in the Opera session |
| History |
Displays a log of recently visited websites in chronological order |
| Transfers |
Launches the download manager |
| Links |
Displays a list of links on which you have clicked during navigation |
| Mail |
Interfaces with an email client |
| Info |
Displays detailed page-specific information |
| Chat |
Sadly, I have been unable to explore this option. It is greyed out and I cannot find any information about it |
| Notes |
Launches the in-built text editor where you can write, copy and paste texts |

As an Opera user for years I thank you for the focus on customisability of Opera as part of your review.
Opera's is packed with useful functions that equals to that of 150 extensions (all hard coded): http://my.opera.com/Rijk/blog/2006/07/04/top-150-popular-firefox-extensions-and-opera ,
I would like to also point at the new Quick Find: "Have you ever forgotten the page where you found that great article or that perfect gift? When using Opera the browser remembers not only the titles and addresses, but the actual content of the Web pages you visit."
Apart from being a fast browser t brings lots of goodies by default, you will keep on finding useful stuff throughout time, and it is highly customisable as well. |
