Logitech G9 Mouse

The awesome design of the hardware is only part of this package. The software included provides some features that I hadn't seen bundled with a mouse before.

The G9 allows you to set up custom profiles. The mouse stores three custom profiles. The profiles allow you to change the following:

  • Name the profile with a description.
  • Assign applications to the profile, ie. when WoW or UT starts, profile would automatically be applied to the mouse
  • Assign a color to the LED lights on the mouse for easy recognition of what profile is in use

It isn't a new feature of a high end mouse, but the G9 allows you to assign mouse button configurations to each individual profile. The thumb buttons can be set so that they are assigned to different actions depending on what application you are using. For example, I have one button set to be used for push to talk in WoW and when I'm not in game it'll be the regular back button that you'd expect.

Rather than just having X access speed and Y access speed, this baby has adjustable speeds depending on mouse distance traveled. You don't want the mouse traveling super-fast when you're just moving between options in menus in Word for instance. That's just a short distance and the speed needs to be slow enough so that you hit on what you need accurately. But you do want to move your mouse pointer at a reasonable speed from one side of your screen to the other (or across two screens if you have them). On the desktop, this feature really is fantastic. It allows for fine manipulation of graphics and at the same time you don't have a slow sluggish mouse when moving items from one monitor to the other. In game it's just as impressive, as it allows for precision when zoomed in on a sniper scope and also extremely fast turn arounds and movement within the game world. In the past you've had to settle for one or the other.

Mouse acceleration works the same as most other mice. The faster you move the mouse the further it will go. This combined with the DPI sensitivity is an unbelievable experience ingame.

The report rate is the speed at which the mouse information is sent to the screen. This is also adjustable, anywhere from 125 - 1000 reports per second. The higher this is set, the higher the CPU utilization. Not only are all of these things adjustable, they are completely adjustable for each profile.

Scrolling speeds are nothing new. They can be set differently for each profile.
