Ripping CDs to Your Hard Drive

As we mentioned earlier, the Windows Media Player Rip tab displays the basics options for ripping your CDs to your hard drive. If you set the program to automatically begin ripping a CD when it’s inserted into the your optical drive, then you won’t have to manually select anything to begin the process. However, you may need to select when to begin the process. The following step by step guide shows you how to begin ripping a CD.

  1. Open Windows Media Player 11. You can find it under Start Menu > All Programs > Windows Media Player.

  2. Insert an audio CD into the optical drive of your desktop or notebook.
  3. Windows Media Player will list all the tracks that you just inserted. Select the tracks you want to rip by clicking the check box next to each track.

  4. When you have the tracks selected, choose the Start Rip button.

  5. Windows Media Player displays the progress of the ripped music in the same window. You can see the pending tracks and the progress of the current track. When all tracks have finished, you will be able to find them in the default rip location that’s set in the advanced settings we mentioned earlier in the article.

The ripping process will take at least a few minutes, depending on your computer’s optical drive read speed and the capabilities of your hardware. To burn an entire library of CDs, you would need to set aside at least a few hours. It can take a while.
