Programs

This final area of compatibility may make or break upgrading for some users. While Microsoft programs can understandably run on Vista, many other software packages cannot.  From our laptop example, some installed software has created compatibility issues with Vista.

From the list above, only one service would actually make a difference, and that’s the webcam software.  MSN messenger works with Windows Vista. It is a Microsoft creation after all. The MSN explorer is an extension of Messenger, so that will also have a different version for use with Vista. While many media players might show as incompatible with Vista, many have been upgraded to meet the requirements of the new operating system.

If you do experience compatibility issues with software, we encourage you to visit the manufacturer’s site to see if a new version – exclusive to Vista – has been developed.

Making the Decision to Upgrade

After reviewing all the information provided by the Vista Upgrade Advisor, you should be able to make an educated decision on how to pursue upgrading you current computer. You may have to upgrade your system hardware in order to get the most out of the Vista operating system. This approach can be technically difficult for many users, so a professional may be required to upgrade components like a video card, memory, hard drive, or DVD drive. If you need to upgrade more than a few of the hardware components in your current setup, the best solution may be to purchase a new computer.

You may experience peripheral support issues common to older cameras, webcams and other accessories. No one wants to lose access to their tools, but through time, many of the compatibility issues may be resolved by the manufacturer. If the Upgrade Advisor determines too many incompatibility issues with these types of devices, then running it in six weeks might resolve some of the driver support issues. However, maybe it’s time for a new computer. I know it’s time for a new laptop for me.
