Sharing Files and Folders

Sharing files, folders or a complete hard drive between multiple computers is easy. People on the network can then share music, movies, photos, work documents etc.

To share a folder or an entire drive, the procedure is the same. You must be logged in as an administrator.

To share a hard drive:

  1. Open My Computer. (Start and click My Computer)
  2. Select the hard drive that you want to share.
  3. Right-click and choose Sharing and Security from the shortcut menu.
  4. The Sharing tab displays a warning that sharing a root drive is not a good idea and is not recommended. Click on the link below the warning message if you intend to continue.
  5. Under Network Sharing and Security, select Share this folder on the network option.
  6. Enter a name for the shared drive in the Share Name box.
  7. Select Allow users to change my files option, if you wish to grant privileges to other network users to make changes to your files. If this is not checked they will be able to view files, but not move, edit or delete files.
  8. Click OK to update the changes.

To share a folder:

  1. Open My Computer. (Start and click My Computer)
  2. Select the folder that you want to share.
  3. Right-click and choose Sharing and Security from the shortcut menu.
  4. Under Network Sharing and Security, select Share this folder on the network option.
  5. Enter a name for the shared folder in the Share Name box.
