Understanding Gmail's Conversations

The oldest message shows at the top, with newer ones falling in underneath. The cascading conversation tree gives users the ability to track a conversation without manually moving messages to folders. The simplicity of this feature attracts technophiles and casual users alike. What’s not to like about convenient sorting features? It eliminates the trappings of many webmail services by doing away with conventional filing of emails. It also keeps the inbox clutter to a minimum.

At the bottom of each conversation tree, you can compose a reply to the original message. By replying using this option, the subject stays the same (unless specifically changed by clicking the change subject line link), which keeps the message in the conversation tree. However, if the person you are emailing changes the subject line, then the message would begin a new conversation tree. So far there is no way to merge that response with an existing conversation.
