The Nikko R2-D2 Wireless Webcam & USB Skype Phone

The resolution of the web camera is pretty decent at 682x582 PAL or 510x492 NTSC. With the ability to zoom in and out and adjust the angle, it’s a powerful spying tool if you’re away from home.

Artoo can turn 360 degrees and move forward and back. The wireless webcam viewing angle can also be adjusted. If you are controlling Artoo from a distance you’ll be happy to know that sensors are included in his feet which watch out for a difference in level. Artoo will stop if this is detected and sound an alarm.

The stand that comes with the whole package is not just a nice place to rest the remote control when it’s not in use. The stand actually connects to a computer via USB, providing a wireless link between Artoo and the computer. The Star Wars logo also lights up when they are connected which is a nice touch.

Artoo is powered by six AA batteries and the USB Skype phone requires two. While a TV remote lasts for a very long time with two AA batteries, I wonder if a few hours of chatting to friends from the Star Wars Fan Club in Geekville would wear out the batteries?

Nikko’s website lists support for the software for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Vista isn’t listed.

As a replacement to a standard small webcam that clips onto the top of your LCD and a microphone that sits on your desk, the Nikko R2-D2 wireless webcam and Skype USB phone are massive and cumbersome. As a sneaky way of spying on your family when you’re away from home, it’s a fun toy. But to accept the US$380 retail price you’d really have to be a Star Wars fan, if not an avid R2-D2 collector.
