Parental Controls

Parental Controls give you the ability to keep tabs on what kind of content your children or other users on your computer might be viewing. IE7 in Vista enables parents to establish filter controls for a range of settings. These include settings for objectionable content and defining the specifics for acceptability in websites.

In Vista, IE7 works directly with Parental Controls and provides a single interface for managing the settings. It also makes it simple and easy for you to view logging information. Parental Controls can also be set up to block file downloads which goes a long way in preventing malware from being downloaded and run on the system.

Please refer to our guide to Parental Controls for further information.

ActiveX Opt-in

The ActiveX platform, which is a mechanism that extends browser capability and enhances the online experience, has unfortunately been used by hackers to write applications that pose a serious threat to the security of PCs. IE7 offers a security mechanism for the ActiveX platform.

ActiveX Opt-in automatically disables all the ActiveX controls on your system, barring a few pre-approved ones. This helps to greatly reduce the potential for abuse. What happens is quite simple – when a website tries to use an ActiveX control that has not been used before, IE7 displays a notification in the Information Bar.

This mechanism helps you to permit or deny access to websites from running ActiveX controls on your machine. In the case of websites using automated scripts that will compromise security, ActiveX Opt-in gives you total control by preventing unauthorized access to your machine. If you do want to enable ActiveX Controls on a website that you trust, all you need to do is click on the Information Bar.
