The Nikko R2-D2 DVD Projector

At the risk of setting myself up for public ridicule, I met John, my husband, at a Star Wars Fan Club meeting. I even likened him to Luke Skywalker (or was it Han Solo) in a giddy love-struck letter I wrote to my parents to introduce him. On our tenth wedding anniversary he bought me a R2-D2 unit that moves around and plays audio files from the movies. So it should come as no surprise that I’ve fallen in love with the R2-D2 DVD projector from Nikko America. What’s even more surprising is that it is so full of features that people who aren’t Star Wars nuts would appreciate it as well.

Nikko America have a coveted license from Lucasfilm Limited to build this one half scale R2-D2 look alike, which plays eleven snippets from the movies and flashes blue, red and green lights in familiar places, just like C3-PO’s little pal does in the movies. The product comes complete with a remote control shaped like a Millenium Falcon, which sits on a stand that plays sounds made by the notorious ship. The cockpit and propulsion system even light up! (I wonder if you can see a wookee inside?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't R2 project video out of the smaller direction adjustable "eye"?

Oh, you are correct! I hang my head in shame. And I call myself a Star Wars fan!

I want one! Never been into star wars, but i still want one! Although i think i'd prefer to make one myself with a built in PC instead as for $2700 it's kinda limited. Pico, Nano or Mini ITX would make a lovely additional feature, YouTube at a max of 264"... Lol. I mean, my big ass watercooled PC tower is on wheels so i can move it to any room, and even sit on it, ridin' it into the sunset-err, i mean living room!

For that price it should have a lil touch screen, wireless net access and a toaster!!!! Overclocked, of course :) Lets go over the top and add GPS so it can navigate around your home! YES! Bluetooth is missing! Blu-Ray (even though i hate it) and it doesn't play back HD-DVD! So again, for the money, bit...tacky looking, really! I'd rather have something you could use for many more things...like, oh i don't know, a PC! Did i mention i love PCs? =D

Kind regards,
Husky/Lee

I give it 6/10, unreachable for many people and for the cost it's quite limited. Battery life is crap (roll on Fuel Cells..) and from the photos it looks a little -too- plastic....not something you'd want around destructive kids either! $2700 for that thing...that's what put me off! I'd love to look at the insides though, see if it's actually worth that cash! And i hope you meant it's 20 watts RMS per channel (not "peak" value BS) and has 5 plus a sub! If it only has a couple of speakers built in it's pants!!! Lol
