Pros and Cons

The main reason why people opt for a private sharing network is the ability to interact with people they are familiar with instead of a web of strangers. Other P2P sharing websites expose you to the risk of accidentally downloading offensive, indecent and illegal content. And unless you meticulously go through all the settings, there is a risk that strangers could download your personal files. Plus, many P2P services get bottlenecked, so the downloads can be agonizingly slow.

Transfers

The Pros of Gigatribe are:

  • It is a direct method of file transfer and no third party or server is involved in the file sharing. It ensures safe and speedy data transfers.
  • Peer to peer private sharing gives you the advantage of building up your network which consists of only your friends, family and people who are known to you. Therefore you can feel assured that the files you share don't have any adware or malware which are more likely to be associated with public P2P and social networking sites.
  • The encryption of data is another valuable option of Gigatribe. You can be always certain that your data transfer is safe. The 128-bit key blowfish encryption ensures the safety of your data.
  • As there is no server involved during file sharing, your own computer acts as a server; therefore, risk of your file transfer being exposed to anybody is reduced. The Gigatribe server only keeps track of your Gigatribe network while file transfer is done only by your computer.
  • There is no size limit for the files being shared.
  •  Gigatribe allows for transfers at the maximum speed available to your through your ISP.
  •  Gigatribe will resume a file transfer even if your Internet disconnects in between; it will continue to download from where it left off.
  •  The interface is user friendly. It doesn’t take much time to learn how to use Gigatribe.

User commands

  •  Once you have the free version you can upgrade to the Ultimate version without setting up a new account
  •  It has a built in chat feature.
  •  It allows you to add, remove and ban users from your friends list.
Pros of the Ultimate Version:
  •  You can do unlimited downloads simultaneously with multiple users at the same time with the Gigatribe Ultimate version.
  •  With Gigatribe Ultimate you can grant permission to certain users to read and write in certain folders.
  •  You can password protect certain shared folders with Gigatribe Ultimate.
  •  You can download your shared folders from any browser.
  •  Email support is provided
  •  A access your PC from a remote location.
The Cons of Gigatribe are:
  • The current Gigatribe version is available for download only for Microsoft Windows users. The company website says there will be Mac and Linux versions but they’re not available yet.
  •  Firewall and routers need to be configured for direct connection before starting up with the Gigatribe. They do offer an Easy Connect feature to connect you with the Gigatribe but it involves a Gigatribe server which in turn makes the file transfer quite slow.
  •  There is no guarantee of detecting a virus in any files you transfer with Gigatribe. You need to scan files with anti-virus software to make sure your downloads are virus free.
  •  Although the interface is easy once you've had a chance to use it's probably still a little bit too complicated for novice PC users
  •  Your computer has to be on for your friends and family to access the shared files or folders.
Conclusion

We all have an abundance of digital data and everyone wants to show their stuff off or share what they've got. The race is on for companies to provide a service that makes it easy and safe to do so. What could be easier than just sharing a folder with the person you want to share your files with? Gigatribe offers a free way to do just that. Providing you then feel comfortable with the interface, you'll probably want to upgrade to the Ultimate version, however, since its extra features are quire enticing. But like any file sharing, keep your virus checker handy.

This is definitely software that's worth a trial run. It doesn't solve every problem the modern world has with file sharing but it certainly solves a few. So the next time you have a family event and you've taken 200 shots and your sister wants a copy, just make a time with her to share your folder and have her grab them all straight off the hard drive.
