OpenOffice Writer is a complete substitute for Microsoft Word and when you launch the program the first thing you’ll notice is its interface. If you’ve been using Word 2007 for a while you may find the interface of Writer a bit dull. It’s more classic looking, like MS Word 2003.
I personally like the interface of Writer since I am used to Word 2003—all those ribbon interfaces in MS Word 2007 confuse me!
There is no need to explain how to use OpenOffice.org Writer. In a nutshell, if you’ve used Microsoft Word you’ll have no trouble finding everything in OpenOffice.org Writer. There are a few things that are in slightly different menu spots but even if they are, the interface itself if the same so it’s no hassle finding them. So what are the real differences? Advantages of OpenOffice.org Writer - As I have mentioned above, one of the biggest advantages of OpenOffice.org Writer is its layout. Any user who has used MS Word 2003 will find it very easy to use.
- OpenOffice.org Writer has almost all the basic features that you’d expect from a word processor.
- OpenOffice.org Writer has great file format support. It can open and edit MS Word documents. Documents created or edited in OpenOffice.org Writer can be saved as .doc format. If you have any files created in MSWord 2007, most importantly the .docx files, OpenOffice.org Writer can efficiently open and edit them.

- Unlike Word, you can create documents in OpenOffice.org Writer and save them as a PDF file in just few clicks.
- In OpenOffice.org Writer, you can change the language for an entire text in the document or just a selected paragraph. You can’t do that in Word!

- OpenOffice.org writer offers more flexibility while bulleting and numbering texts.
- OpenOffice.org Writer’s Wizard assistance is more helpful compared to Microsoft’s Office assistant.
- You can easily embed backgrounds and sounds to OpenOffice.org Writer documents.
- Using OpenOffice.org Writer, you can create HTML files similar to MS Word but unlike MS Word they won’t contain all of the annoying Word html tags which often confuse a website admin system.
