Step 2

In the Preferences section on the Advanced tab, mark the Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library checkbox. By performing this action, when you play an MP3 file through iTunes it automatically adds it to your library.

Step 3

Select the song or file that you want to play as an audiobook and double click on it. This will open the file in the playing items window.

Step 4

Right click on the file and select Get Info. Click Create AAC Version. This will make a copy of the file and will add the new file to your library. Once the conversion is complete, remove the original file from your library. They will no longer be needed for this process.

Step 5

Right click on the newly created file in iTunes and click Show in Windows Explorer. This will open a new window with the converted file in it. The audio file will be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.

Step 6

You will notice that the new files have the .m4a extension. They must be renamed to.m4b.

Now that the files are renamed, you can add them to your iTunes library once again. Open the  Audiobook category and import the renamed audio file/s to this section.

Just a quick note: The 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder' step is not required (and could cause some horrible file duplication if you don't use the default itunes folder locations), and you could even convert your mp3s to aac with something other than itunes.
